AI is no doubt a transforming technology that has been revolutionizing industries across the world, however, there is an absolute need for AI ethics to oversee its responsible development. It is evident from the fact that while 72% of Americans find AI to have a positive impact on society, almost a significant portion around 65% are also worried about its ethical implications (according to a survey by Pew Research Center).
Bias in algorithms is one of the major concerns related to the potential discriminatory use of AI. It can significantly affect the loan approval or job application processes. Brookings Institutions in one of its studies found that resumes that were Black-sounding were ranked lower by AI hiring tools that showed the racist discrimination in training datasets.
Another concern is transparency. Decision-makers, users, customers, and other stakeholders must be aware of how the AI system comes to its decision. Therefore, AI professionals must ensure proper explainability of these AI tools that don’t erode but reinforce trust and accountability.
