September 17, 2026, Phoenix, AZ — The United States Artificial Intelligence Institute (USAII®) joined leaders from Arizona College of Nursing (AZCN) at the Arizona College of Nursing Educator Conference 2026 to present an evidence-based approach for safeguarding academic integrity as generative artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into higher education.
The live online session, titled “Safeguarding Academic Integrity in the AI Era: An Evidence-Based, Replicable Model from Arizona College of Nursing,” was held on August 27, 2026, and attended by nursing faculty, deans, and campus leadership from AZCN locations across multiple states.
The session featured Dr. Tadzia Dennis, PhD, Dean, Arizona College of Nursing; Dr. Bryce Hardy, DC, Professor and AI Academic Integrity Task Force member at Arizona College of Nursing; and Dr. Milton Mattox, EdD, CEO of USAII.
Moving Beyond AI Detection to Responsible Academic Governance
As generative AI began reshaping classroom practices, Arizona College of Nursing took a structured institutional approach rather than relying primarily on automated AI-detection tools.
In June 2023, AZCN established an AI Academic Integrity Task Force comprising faculty, deans, and administrators. The group developed an academic integrity model that emphasizes faculty judgment, transparency, and professional responsibility, rather than rigid numerical detection thresholds.
At the center of the approach is a five-component framework built around:
Designed for adaptability, the model can be applied across institutions with different program structures, campus sizes, missions, and regulatory environments.
“When generative AI reached our classrooms, we had a choice between reacting out of fear or leading with intention. We chose to lead. Our graduates are entrusted with patient lives, so academic integrity is a matter of public trust, and we built a policy that protects that trust while giving faculty room to teach.”, said Dr. Tadzia Dennis, PhD, Dean, Arizona College of Nursing’s Phoenix Campus.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bryce Hardy, DC, Arizona College of Nursing, highlighted the importance of keeping human expertise at the center of academic integrity decisions. “The Task Force did not want a number to make our hardest judgment calls for us. Detection percentages age quickly and fail often. What we built instead keeps faculty expertise at the center and gives instructors clear principles they can apply in real conversations with students.”
A Research-Backed Model for Higher Education
The conference session was informed by the peer-reviewed research paper “Safeguarding Academic Integrity in the AI Era: A Case Study from Arizona College of Nursing,” authored by Tadzia Dennis, Bryce Hardy, and Milton Mattox and published in the Journal of Higher Education Management, Volume 41, Issue 1.
The model is grounded in established frameworks and guidance, including the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, AACN Essentials, and UNESCO guidance, strengthening its relevance for institutions seeking a structured and responsible approach to AI governance.

AZCN has given higher education a practical blueprint for governing AI responsibly, grounded in evidence rather than guesswork,” said Dr. Milton Mattox, EdD, CEO, USAII®.
The session underscored a growing challenge for higher education: academic integrity in the age of AI cannot be addressed through technology alone. Institutions increasingly need governance structures that combine clear policies, faculty capability, responsible evaluation, and human judgment.
By bringing together institutional experience, academic research, and established AI governance principles, the Arizona College of Nursing model offers a practical framework that other educational institutions can adapt as they develop their own approaches to responsible AI use.
